Electric hot water systems
Electric hot water units remain the predominant choice in Australian homes and have been produced domestically for over a century. Although the basic design is largely unchanged, contemporary models incorporate better components and thicker, higher-density insulation around their storage cylinders. This enhanced insulation keeps heat for longer, cutting down heat loss and boosting efficiency compared with units made prior to 2000.
These systems work similarly to a kettle, using an electric heating element, and are sold in three primary power ratings for the Queensland market: 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW (with a small number of 4.8kW models used in specific locations due to higher supply requirements). You’ll find these ratings across popular brands like Rheem, Dux, Vulcan, AquaMAX and Rinnai.
Bear in mind that different element sizes do not alter the overall energy rating: a 1.8kW element uses half the power of a 3.6kW element but requires approximately twice the time to heat the same volume of water to an identical temperature.
Most electric hot water systems are built with mild steel tanks coated internally with vitreous enamel and safeguarded by a sacrificial anode, though stainless steel tank options are available; the older copper-style heaters are no longer manufactured.

I found SunCity Hot Water on google after a friend told me they had used them. I rang for a call-out and as it was Friday they said they could not do it till Monday. A while later they rung and said they would come around lunchtime as they were doing a job nearby. The job was done quickly and efficiently and I had hot water back within 2 hours. I realized the problem must have been there for months as the water was so lovely and hot that night. Very pleased that they took the time to come to me so I didn't have to wait till the Monday. Replaced and relocated electric hot water system with a heat pump at a competitive price.
Sun City Hot Water did a fantastic job. Were very easy to deal with from quote to finish. Took the time to understand what I wanted and explain how existing plumbing needed to be modified to relocate. On installation day they phoned ahead (always appreciated) and reconfirmed new placement etc before starting. Work was very neat and professional. Made sure that everything was working and cleaned up before leaving.

An electric hot water system
An electric hot water system can make up roughly a third of your electricity costs if you don’t have PV solar exporting to the grid. Tariff 11 supplies power around the clock at the standard rate used for general lighting and appliances, which results in higher running costs. Systems on tariff 33 run for about 18 hours each day, commonly switching off between 6–9am and 6–9pm. Tariff 31, the lowest-cost option, only supplies power during off-peak periods, generally from 9pm to 6am.
It’s worth noting that tariff 31 is usually unsuitable for hot water cylinders under 250 litres when the household has two or more occupants.
Electric hot water systems come in a broad range of storage sizes, from compact 25-litre units for kitchens and single basins to large 400-litre tanks for bigger homes. The following is a general sizing guide for tank capacity and typical household suitability (actual needs will vary by usage):
50L & 80L: Best for 1–2 people in very small units. These sizes are intended for tariff 11 and aren’t appropriate for off-peak tariffs.
125L: Suitable for 2–3 people in a unit or small townhouse when on tariff 33.
160L: Suited to 2–4 people in a unit or small townhouse when connected to tariff 33.
250L: Works for 2–4 people on tariff 31 in most three-bedroom homes, and can serve up to 6 people on tariff 33.
315L: Appropriate for 3–5 people on tariff 31 or up to 7 people on tariff 33.
400L: Ideal for 4–7 people on tariff 31, up to 9 people on tariff 33, and up to 12 people on tariff 11.

Rheem
Read More
Rheem is one of the best-known names in hot water, with an international standing for reliability and supported by one of the largest marketing efforts in the sector.
Across Australia, Rheem produces a comprehensive selection of electric hot water systems:
Mild steel vitreous enamel (VE) models are manufactured in Sydney
Stainless steel models are produced in Melbourne, at the former AquaMAX facility
Under the Rheem umbrella you’ll also find other respected domestic hot water brands such as AquaMAX, Vulcan and Solahart.
Warranty periods vary from 5 to 12 years depending on the unit’s size and construction. To preserve your warranty and prolong the life of your hot water cylinder, servicing is necessary at least every five years. This service should include replacement of the sacrificial anode on vitreous enamel tanks, and it’s advisable to change the pressure and temperature relief valve while servicing.
At North Lakes Hot Water, we endorse Rheem systems for their proven dependability, wide product range, and the confidence that comes with one of the industry’s most trusted names.
AquaMAX
Read More
The AquaMAX brand has been established since 1988; originally a family-run company, it was acquired by Rheem in 2009 after having sold more than 500,000 electric hot water systems.
AquaMAX has long held a reputation in the industry for reliable quality, particularly for its stainless steel hot water products.
Their stainless steel units continue to be manufactured in Victoria, while the mild steel VE electric hot water range is produced at Rheem’s Sydney facility.
AquaMAX cylinders carry warranties ranging from seven to ten years depending on tank capacity — smaller capacity cylinders typically have the shorter warranty.
A service is recommended before five years of use, with anode replacement especially advised to extend the life of the tank.
Vulcan
Read More
Vulcan is a well-regarded hot water brand produced by Rheem. Positioned as Rheem’s more economical line, Vulcan delivers reliable performance without a high price tag. Vulcan’s electric storage units use mild steel with a vitreous enamel lining, engineered to provide consistent operation in Australian homes. Warranty details: 7 years for the 50L electric storage model; 10 years for capacities from 80L up to 400L. To extend the lifespan of the unit, replace the sacrificial anode between years four and five. This maintenance protects the tank from corrosion and helps the system perform optimally. At North Lakes Hot Water, we endorse Vulcan hot water systems as an affordable, dependable option supported by Rheem’s manufacturing standards.
Rinnai
Read More
Rinnai is widely regarded as a frontrunner in gas hot water technology. Historically, their electric hot water units were either imported from China or built by Dux in NSW. More recently, Rinnai has established its own production facility in Victoria and now manufactures the Hotflo electric hot water systems locally.
The Rinnai electric lineup ranges from space-saving 25 litre models (perfect for kitchenettes or limited areas) up to 400 litre tanks suited to larger households. Warranty details: 7 years for 25L and 50L units, and 10 years for all larger sizes. Please note: to keep the warranty valid, a service is required every five years (or earlier). At North Lakes Hot Water, our North Lakes plumbers supply and recommend Rinnai hot water systems for their dependable performance, energy efficiency, and the reassurance of Australian-made manufacturing.

Built from mild steel and coated internally with a vitreous enamel lining, Thermann tanks include a sacrificial anode to guard against corrosion.
